Fort Lauderdale

Filed under: Sherlock Holmes — Matilda @ 9:34 pm

We have added a new location in McMurdo’s Travelogue, Fort Lauderdale. This is a city in Florida, in the USA, never visited by Sherlock Holmes (that we know about). But there is a connection, and a small amount of interesting history linking it up.

Why Watson’s View?

Filed under: Sherlock Holmes — Matilda @ 11:09 am

A new Trifling Monograph has been added, short title “Why Watson’s View?”. Full Title: The Importance of Being Watson: The half-hearted need not apply

Margaret Whitmer looks at the portrayal of Holmes and Watson in several modern interpretations and the importance to the original stories of having them presented to the reader by Dr. Watson.

Be sure to check out the photo from the Star Trek version of Holmes and Watson. And yes, maybe Brent Spiner, the actor who played Data, had some unrealized professional potential there. Personally, we would have picked him over Downey any time.

February 4, 2011

Filed under: Sherlock Holmes — Matilda @ 2:23 pm

It is the fourth of February in the year 2011. It has been a severe winter, and the snow lies deep on the hillsides, in the valleys, and upon the frozen lakes and streams. The county snow-ploughs have, however, kept the roads open, and life goes on pretty much as usual, but with fewer down-state tourists.

Here, among the lumber-camps of Michigan, we like to pause on this day and drink a toast to one of our own, a man who traveled down to Chicago looking for better opportunities, and from there went on to achieve fame as someone who almost fooled Sherlock Holmes, but not quite. Sadly, he didn’t fool Moriarty either.
